For Adam and Allison Messner, Yardzen’s cofounders, one of the many joys of summer is spending time together at their home in California’s wine country. During the warm season, the landscape around their historic farmhouse is uniquely Californian – golden, dried grass (the Messners don’t irrigate), live oaks, buzzing bees amongst the lavender, and edible plants heavy with produce.

Labor Day is an especially wonderful time in Calistoga for the Messners, who find themselves outdoors from morning until night, playing baseball, building forts, exploring the creek, and barbecuing. Although the days are hot, there is often a whisper of cool wind amongst the trees, and in the evenings, temperatures drop low enough for cozy gatherings.

Here, we rounded up the outdoor furniture and decor pieces that bring to life their home’s outdoor spaces during the summer and the transition to fall.

The Neighbor sectional has long been a Yardzen favorite. Made of FSC-certified teak and performance Sunbrella fabric, these sectionals work beautifully in any outdoor space. For families with kids and pets, we especially like Neighbor’s new, darker fabrics, like this gray.

Set the Scene with Tabletop Decor

Tabletop decor always sets the mood for a fun evening at home. Holidays, like Labor Day, offer a great excuse to decorate based on a theme! Pictured here, the Messners brought in classic decor elements for their celebration at home, like gingham, bunting, enamelware, and mason jar vases to set the tone.

Add personality to your outdoor space with the bright colors and bold patterns of Heather Taylor Home’s 100% hand woven tablecloths.
