This week, we’re celebrating The Summer of Yardzen – our greatest hits from summer 2023. Here, we explore a small sample of our most photo-worthy yards – from upstate New York to Austin to Southern California – and many places in between! Here are some of our favorite Yardzen yards of this summer.
NYT Food Writer Creates an Upstate Edible Garden
Food writer and editor, Sarah Copeland, draws cooking inspiration from the bounty of her upstate New York landscape and her travels– she splits her time between the East Coast and Hungary. When working with Yardzen, her goal was to create a visually appealing edible garden with raised beds and outdoor dining room to host dinner parties with her freshly picked produce.
Family Retreat in Oklahoma
This family yard in Oklahoma was built to encourage family time outside, including raised beds for getting hands dirty and a covered kitchen and dining room for family meals alfresco. One thing this yard does so beautifully is play with height and texture, including the handmade wood trellises. We also love the Plains-appropriate flowers throughout!
Resort-Inspired Backyard in Austin
For Brittany Shimansky and her family, including husband Brian and daughter Siena, creating a high-design, “resort-like” backyard was her top priority when working with Yardzen. The long and narrow backyard comes to life with billowy grasses that line the small, family-size pool. The design team also added a new tile patio, which includes a sauna, a kid’s space with playhouse, and a lounge with a fire pit.
Traditional Yard for Entertaining in the South
These Yardzen clients bought a dark, outdated brick house and transformed the exterior and yard into their dream family home – perfect for indoor-outdoor living. This outdoor living space features several elements that encourage time outside, regardless of the weather, including a large covered kitchen and patio, pool, and pass-through window with a bar for entertaining.
Farmhouse-Inspired Family Oasis
In this Yardzen yard in Santa Clarita, CA, the homeowners were inspired by the warm pastoral landscape surrounding them. In this yard, organically shaped garden beds, featuring native and pollinator-loving grasses and shrubs, are connected by meandering pathways of California gold gravel. Throughout the yard, you’ll find several distinct outdoor rooms, including a dining room, seating room, and a lounge with a vintage Malm fireplace.
A Los Angeles Yard Inspired by the Hamptons
Yardzen worked with the homeowners of this traditional home in Los Angeles to create an outdoor oasis that feels reminiscent of elevated Hamptons style, while still incorporating modern family elements, like a plunge pool.
An Always-Booked Airbnb in Scottsdale
The backyard is one of the main draws of this busy Airbnb in Scottsdale. The homeowners worked with Yardzen to create a modern backyard that complements the stark black exterior of this updated rancher. What was once an overwatered grass lawn is now a plunge pool with a small section of artificial turf and a lounge area under a native Palo Verde tree.
